Table Talk #4: Millets: An Ancient Grain w/ Vijayalakshmi Sivasamy

  • Artcite Inc 109 University Avenue West Windsor, ON, N9A 5P4 Canada (map)

This month our presenter is teacher, mother, gardener, and owner of Iyal, Vijayalakshmi Sivasamy. Viji will be presenting Millets: a versatile ancient grain which is highly nutritious and naturally gluten-free. Millets have been cultivated and used in different parts of the world as a healthy alternative to highly processed and less nutritious foods. From millet-based muesli, porridge, and other breakfast cereals, to millet fried rice, Viji will share her experiences with these easy-to-make traditional comfort foods, as staples of her and her son's childhood diets. Participants will also be treated to a sample pack of sprouted millet cereal mix and mango ice cream to take home, along with a recipe so they can make the cereal themselves.

Table Talk offers an interactive experience that includes food tasting. Each participant will leave with a recipe so they can prepare the meal for others and pass on the knowledge and stories they've been told. If you're meat-free, please let us know by choosing the veg option when registering.

This event is part of our bi-monthly series Table Talk, an ongoing collaborative program with COOK-UP that invites folks to consider the ways food and art come together to transform, connect, and nourish. Through stories and memories, participants are invited to interact with the ingredients that make up a dish. Registration required. Spaces are limited. $25.
