(un)happy objects is group exhibition curated by Adrienne Crossman featuring the work of Madelyne Beckles, Shellie Zhang, Vida Beyer, and Kaythi. Drawing on Sara Ahmed’s concept of the unhappy object, these artists take on subjects often seen as “difficult,” such as queer identity, cultural heritage, race and feminism, through the recontextualization of cultural iconography.

Artcite Inc. 2021 Artist in Residence: Yakonikulanestka Evangeline John

Yakonikulanestka Evangeline John will activate the Artcite gallery for a full month this summer. Her artistic goals are grounded in “learning more Indigenous art forms such as wood carving, cornhusk work, flat stitch beadwork, sewing, basketry, and more. Yakonikulanestka’s art has always been Indigenous-focused, bringing awareness to Indigenous issues, and giving positive representations of Indigenous Peoples through art. Most importantly, she devotes her art to the continuation and revitalization of Indigenous art forms.” (Yakonikulanestka Evangeline John)

Announcing Stone and Sky X Artcite AiR: Erik Johnson

This June, Artcite Inc. has teamed up with Stone and Sky Tiny House to facilitate a week long residency with local artist Erik Johnson. Johnson will utilize the Stone and Sky Tiny House to work on his new interview series, ‘Off the Rails.’ This project aims to highlight local historians, artists and writers who are publishing, performing, and writing the Black history in the Windsor/Essex region, including the Underground Railroad in Sandwich Towne. This residency was made possible with the generous financial support of the Windsor Storyteller’s Collective.

Artist Kama La Mackerel revisits stereotypical landscapes of Mauritius, their home-island “from beaches to waterfalls, from sugarcane fields to the seven coloured earth of Charamel,” reclaiming these sites which are so often portrayed in postcards and tourist brochures (La Mackerel).
