Michael Waterman
Lament
September 7–October 6, 2007

Lament is an evocative soundscape created by a variety of simple electro-mechanical processes.

Michael Waterman has combined new components with elements from his previous sound installations to create a haunting soundscape that draws attention to human absence. Mechanically operated wind chimes, constantly shifting sine tones generated by mechanized baby monitors and a chorus of disembodied plastic recorders played by photo-sensor triggered blower motors contribute ironically to a lament for all that is lost in an era of increased dependence upon technology. Appropriating the mundane aesthetic of certified electrical components, Lament nevertheless strives towards the ur-sound of transcendence.
