Peter Smith
Here
April 15–May 14, 2005

Inspired by the natural environment and human intervention, Peter Smith combines found objects from both the natural and man-made worlds in an attempt to highlight the “ongoing struggle between aggressive human sprawl” and its affect on the environment. Influenced by animation, comic books and outsider art, Smith creates work loaded with the iconography of spacemen, roads, and “boxes”, which Smith sees as “breaking up the natural world”.

Peter Smith’s solo exhibition Here is presented by Artcite Inc. in cooperation with the Citizens Environment Alliance’s 4th annual “Smogfest”. Beginning in 2002, the CEA initiated Smog Fest, a month-long program of events intended to raise awareness of Windsor’s appalling air quality (Environment Canada designated Windsor as “the smog capital of Canada” ) and other environmental concerns. Smog Fest events include film screenings, public forums, art exhibitions, artist lectures, parades and demonstrations. The CEA is a non-profit, community-based environmental research and advocacy organization.

Peter Smith is represented by Robert Birch Gallery (Toronto, ON).
