Reciprocal |

is an assemblance of artistic expression led by Chidera Ikewibe, Jada Malik Larkin, and Phoenix Thomas, collaborating to present the culmination of a Reciprocal: done, given, or felt equally by both sides. All 3 artists know what it means to create from their person into and onto their canvas ; whether that is sculpting, the Gallery wall; the heir of the shows - display is an artistic practice.

Reciprocal is crafted from 'the meeting table.' Whereby the 3 met to further the enthusiasm of Artcite's residency (BIPOC). The continuation stemmed into a development of 3 originators. Collaborating individual works to create a House and a Home for their centerpieces.

Reciprocal is that home.
Where each Artists' personality (flavour) is displayed and the Artcite Gallery is the Reciprocal of their works.

"Inherent in their work is the notion; related to each other in such a way that one completes the other or is the equal of each other."

Teajai Travis is a multi-hyphenated experimentalist that mediums with sound, space, and a specific method of meditation. As a hereditary storyteller and intuitive percussionist, Teajai is manifesting a practice of installation that engages the empty spaces of sacred geometry, the poetry of mathematical patterns, and the metaphysics of cellular memory. He is exploring pathways of trauma rehabilitation, ancestral resurrection, multidimensional cognition, and meditative time travel by employing the intuitive rituals of his ancestor cells and conjuring the energetic intersections of public space and imagination.

Chidera Ikewibe (CHI.IKE)

What information is hidden in a description? What information is lost to summary? The Ikenga in Igbo traditional spirituality is a symbol of one’s strength and power while on earth and broken and buried with their owner when they die to pass on that strength to the after life. What does it mean if an unbroken Ikenga is in a glass cage on display long after their owner has died? What does it mean to be an onlooker?

Chidera Ikewibe (CHI.IKE) is an Igbo-Nigerian Canadian born poet and artist. She often blends and blurs the lines between poetry and artistry. Her work incorporates Nsibidi, her Igbo culture and many other poetic and artistic influences.

Phoenix Thomas

Phoenix Thomas will improvise mixed-media installations installed directly onto the surface of the gallery wall that combine text/poetry, painting, collage and kitsch items. These works tell stories in space to invite audiences into the artist's uniquely-lived half-indigenous experience, in which he interrogates modern understandings of Indigenous Peoples.

Phoenix Thomas is a half-native (Potawatomi) who appears Caucasian and was born and raised on the Walpole Island Indian Reservation. He graduated with an MFA from the University of Manitoba in 2016 and has been exhibiting and creating art since 2011.
